African Tortoise...more

Linda G Dec 28, 2003 05:40 PM

Today will looking at the pet section in our local paper there
was an ad for 2 young African Tortoises. They are asking
$200 for the torts and their cage.

Can someone give me some info on them. I am just curious
because I have never seen any for sale around here.

Thanks
Linda

The odds are that they are the African spurred tortoise (Geochelone sulcata)in which case you'd be throwing away your money at that price unless it fulfills your need to save something if that need exists in you.

Is there something wrong with this kind of tortoise?

If these are sulcata's they can be bought for about $50 each. They grow to be very large tortoises. An adult can weigh over 100 pounds. The cage that comes with them will only be a temporary home, they will quickly grow out of it.

If we are talking Sulcata here, there is nothing wrong with them. They make fantastic pets but they can get very big very fast. If you're not prepared for what you are getting into it can be an unwelcome surprise.
Baby sulcatas sell for $25 to $50 each at most herp shows. You can make or buy a suitable enclosure for under $50.
