substrate (mozambique spitting cobra)......

nevrmore Dec 28, 2003 07:41 PM

i plan to get a mozambique spitting cobra soon, but am at a loss about the tank setup, perticularly substrate. i don't like the idea of keeping the snake in a shoebox with a paper towel--i want something naturalistic. for my other snakes i use fine aspen shavings. i also have pine, coconut bark, calcisand and a little bit of reptibark available. would any of these be any good or should i buy somethng else?

currently have:
blue tongue skink (skinky),
pygmy rattlesnake (gordon),
nile monitor (dick),
reticulated python (mousetrap),
egyptian painted agama (george),
ball python (snake'n'bake)
monocled cobra (fluffy).

My experience with this elapid ... nil.
BUT, I have experience with most of the Aussie ones and know local people here who've had mozambique spitting cobra's illegally here as well as legally in the USA and have noted their keeping methods - not that they were any different for this snake as to local (Aussie) species like King Browns, TIGERS, Browns and the like.
The snake (mozambique spitting cobra) is typical of most large elapids in that it is fairly bullet proof and lives on almost anything.
Just watch for toxic or dusty substrates.
Newspaper is fine as is most other things and my advice is run with what you find easiest to clean.
Heat gradients and the like and ridding your snake of parasites etc is more important.
ALL THE BEST
