My New Mali and this post adresses many problems that are commonly asked about,,, plzz respond

delbalso Dec 28, 2003 07:45 PM

i just got a new wc mali uromastyx, its a baby and is less than 6 inches long, hes is very good when im handling him and i will try to get a picture of of him or her tomoro when i find my camera

i checked his belly and noticed he does have a line of pores, i forgot if that means its a boy or a girl, can someone tell me veryquickly?

when i brought him home i noticed that i did not have any of the recommended regular diet, i have no idea what mustard greens, kale greens and turnip greens are, and where do you get them?
I just put a bowl of finch seeds and chopped celery in there for now is that ok?

i have a complex hide made from the rocks below(not in that setup though), there are a lot of little cracks and he just sticks himself as far as possible in those cracks and gets stuck, one time his head was actually under the sand, i think i covered up most of those small cracks, can anyone tell me about the cause about this behaviour?

i have a uv bulb and and a heat bulb, but they both turn off at night and i dont know if it is warm enough, it is in the high 70s and it is winter so is tthat ok, otherwise what changes are advised?

I will post a picture of him or her tomorrow if i can, please respond and all help and advice is greatly appreciated. thanx

Pores can mean male, but I understand Malis can be difficult to sex when they are young. I know pores means squat with Saharans.

Seed is ok to feed in a separate dish (no sunflower seeds in the shell though!!). Celery is essentially worthless - all water and no nutrition. You can get the other greens at grocery stores with big produce sections or at health food stores (for dandys). I just asked someone the first time I went looking for unfamiliar greens. You can also go to www.beautifuldragons.com for nutrition info and photos of many of the common greens/veggies.

He does need at least one place to hide. It should be small enough that he feels safe, but big enough he can get all the way into it. Just be certain to push the rocks or whatever all the way through the sand down to the bottom of the tank. Also make sure there's no way for the stuff to shift. They are strong little diggers and can get crushed under unstable hide materials.

When they hide to sleep they look dead - it took me a while to get used to the smashed up poses they seem to find comfy. Arthur commonly mashed her face into cracks and down into the substrate. Her favorite sleeping place is so small I would never have believed she could fit.

It's good for temps to drop at night to mid 60s or 70s. He should be fine.

Can't wait to see pictures!

hi 70's? If this is right try pumpung up another 40 degrees!

atleast 110-115F minimum for them,Remeber uro are the ultimate heat lovers and need it to thrive or he/she will die.

so work on that by either getting a special heat bulb from home depot like i did, thier i think 7.99 and its 125 watts and it pumps out over 120F from 2 feet away.

Its a real nice super hot bulb and my uro loves it.

your other option is a zoo-med 100-150 watt bulb.

ill take a pic of my heat lamp and post the pic so you get what your looking for if home depot is close to you and want a killer heat bulb.

its a phillips 125watt clear heat bulb,it does not have uva or uvb so you need to use them as well.

like i said 120-130F from 2 feet away.

High 60's to low 70's is good for night time temps. Daytime temps should be 80-85 on the cool side of the cage and about 100 on the high side of the cage with a basking spot of about 120-135 or so.

yes - sorry if i was unclear. i was referring strictly to night temps, as that was what the question referred to.
