Forum Ettiquette - Especially for New (and young) Users

Christy Talbert Dec 28, 2003 10:37 PM

Hi all -

Many of you do this, but many more do not, so I'd like to make a little suggestion. If you:

1) Post a question to a message board (Especially one in all caps that reads "URGENT PLEASE HELP!!!"

2) Ask for help by email from a breeder or forum user and recieve it

3) Get a long email or forum post of advice from someone trying to help you with breeding/health/husbandry etc. of your animals,

It is only polite to at least respond to the email or post with a "Thanks." You don't have to acknowledge each individual who responded to the thread, but to just say "Thanks guys, I appreciate your help,. She ate a mouse!"Or whatever), below your original post would be nice. This way those who answered at least knows you saw the response, which they may have spent half an hour writing.

Ditto with email!! This week I had two husbandry questions, one for Ralph Davis about balls and another for Robyn at Pro-exotics about a monitor. Both professionals responded immediately (on the weekend) with great answers. Robyn's response had to take at least 20 minutes to compose, and I didn't even buy the monitor from ProExotics! Now, how rude would it have been for me to read their emails, take the advice and not hit "reply" and say "thanks guys"?!?!

I do not believe most of the knowledgeable folks on these forums give advice because they want to be appreciated (or make money). Most simply like helping people and animals. But, this does not mean we should take lightly the time and effort they have spent to help us succeed.

Just my two cents,
Christy

It's not really for me that I posted this, but for the true experts who spend loads of time. We have the probbaly have foremost authorities in the world on balls and boids right here on this forum, and I think that is awesome. Where would any of us be if someone had not answered all our questions when we were new?

Christy

when I'm on here I am usually joking around with someone....or else I am complimenting someone's animal....on occasion I have had a different opinion than others and there have been times that I stated my opinion and I'm sure there will be more times........I see nothing wrong in that.....you state your opinion as well.......many times I find you amusing and sometimes I think you are a bit mean....but that is up to you, I don't mind one way or another...I'm not very politically correct and that is fine with me.........I do not come here to sell anything, I use the classifieds for that.....I don't give advice very often and the reason is that many times I find what I might have to say will not be what the person asking wants to hear.....if anyone asks me for advice in an email or phone call I would most definitely tell them what I do or what I think works well, but many times on this forum people rip other people to shreds over the advice they are giving....such as the age old question "do you feed live or f/t?"....if you respond "live" you are in for it....next come the pictures of what happens when you feed live and on and on and on.........I know that you know what I am talking about ....well I hope you have a healthy and happy New Year and I will look forward to more entertaining posts from you....

I was making a point, which because Christy asking for manors and of young Green Tree Python on the Ball Python forums persistant effort to add something where nothing was needed did tend to take me way overboard. My point being that not everyone gives advice as Christy claimed and not those she grouped as advice givers are of the most polite often times. And that some of the folks are of limited experience to be giving advice. I think snake people are a rough bunch, and as the breed(snake & keeper) becomes more aggressive so does the keepers mentality. Hot keepers have an entirely scary demeanor often times.
Gail, you seem to have me pegged.I always enjoy your posts and meant and mean you no harm. Take care and happy holidays to you,the old man and the collection. Again for the sake of the manors police( in this case Christy), I absolutely and sincerely apologize for lumping you into an example scenario.
And now with that so entirely overstated to the point that it does seem insincere. I do apologize.Take care.

Thank you for replying to my reply.

I deeply appreciate your response to my response, and am eternally indebted to you for taking the time from your day to come out to play.

If I should ever have another child, I would certainly consider naming him/her after you in recognition of the heartfelt appreciation that I have for your efforts to partake in this thread. Of course, calling a kid "Vtherpster" may lead to the occasional bit of good-humored leg-pulling by the other kiddies...

Anyway, once again I wish to express my sincerest thanks and gratitude.

gailT Dec 29, 2003 10:40 PM

Hey Vtherpster....no apology necessary....I didn't take anything you said as being mean and nasty....although I take it some people didn't like what you wrote....LOL.....I'm actually quite thick skinned you know........too bad they removed the other posts.....it looks like someone must have complained....hmmmmmm....
Nigel and I and the animals are all doing well....and we wish you a healthy and happy New Year....and I look forward to more of your "amusing" posts.....

Best regards,
