ANT PROBLEM INSIDE VEILED CAGE...

sallie_keeper Jun 04, 2003 01:33 AM

I am having a big problem with ants inside of my Veiled's enclosure. the bugs are all over his tree. I do not know how to kill them without hurting the cham. They are NOT after the chameleon, but the water. This is so early in the season for ants, so I will be flooded with them if I do not get this under control and SOON..

ANYONE HAVE ADVICE?? What can I use that will not harm the Veiled??

o - take everything out and wash it with hot water, and if the cham cage is outside, i would suggest moving indoors in ored to make sure there are no more ants

Mulberry Farms used to sell this insecticidal chalk. It works very well. I use it on the base of my stands, just draw a line with the chalk and ants won't cross it.

If the enclosure is up on legs put the legs in dishes of water or vegetable oil mix. If the enclosure doesn't have legs you could put it up on a table and do the same. Ants can really injure a cham, especially at night when it is asleep.

I had a similar problem with my baby panther's cage and I put the cage on a stand in a large rubbermaid sweater container of water. It almost worked, but the little monsters climbed up the cord to the UV light fixture which rested on the top of the cage. I found that if I carefully put ant spray on a tissue and wiped the cord only ( so that none touched the cham cage), it worked.

That's exactly where the ant's are coming from. I noticed TODAY that they are all over the wall in back of the cage. They even found there way inside of the drip system..up throught the hose..

The cage is INSIDE, Yes, it does have legsupport.. I've been spraying the legs and floor around it. I even sprayed the plug..

ABOUT THE CHALK.. I have some of that, but how do I mark the TREE?? THE ants are up and down it.. I think there was a small colony in the tree..BEFORE I got it.. THE original Cham owner had baits at base of the tree..but I am worried about poisoning the animal..

thanks..

The ant colony was in the plant pot. I took the plant outside because I did not care that much about it. If you really like your plant try submerging the plant pot in a large bucket or tub of water for a few hours to see if you can drown the ants. You may have to hose the plant off if they climb up the trunk.
Make sure you cover the dirt completely with water or they will not all drown. I would not try the baits. I would worry he might eat a poisoned ant.
