My Blood/Sumatran

Tormato Jun 04, 2003 01:56 AM

I got this Blood a little while ago. They said it was a Borneo short tailed python. I don't believe that for a second. I heard a lot of horror stories with Bloods, but this guy has no drive to bite. When I pick it up from its cage, it lets out a little hiss, but its less than intimidating. I would think it was stressed, but it functions like any python I've owned. It frequently comes out of its hide box and get this; I put a tree branch in its cage just to experiment. I actually caught the snake climbing!! No joke. It hates hides and always burrows in the substrate. It even hates sphagnum hides. I decided to take away both the hides and use more substrate for burrowing. I use a humidity infuser for air and moisture. All in all, as my first Blood, she/he is a pretty cool snake. It has a really cute plain look on its face-like all bloods. But I just with they had more character like my Carpets. No one told me they were boring!

or I don't even think it is a borneo. Looks like a Brongersmai to me. I am including a pic of my young female Brongersmai, and I was told she was a Borneo, I was like "ummm... no way".
anyways, take a look at her then a look at your snake and I think you will the the similarities... not to mention blacks have orange eyes.

The person who sold you the snake, did they say it was a "Sumatran", because that can mean a red or a black. Usually the reds are referred to as Malaysian, but there are some animals from Sumatra classified as Brongersmai. But Borneo???
Nahhh....
By no means am I a professional, but this is my opinion...I have a black and reds... and that thing definitely looks like a red to me. If you really want a professional opinion I'd e-mail Dave Barker and ask him.
Also, look below a few posts down and you will see a bunch of blacks that people have pics of...

Dont be afraid of it getting bigger and being a big bad monster... looks to be in great condition, and if its not a devil now, chances are it wont be a devil later in life.
However, you may want to watch out for the month or two when its transitioning to sexual maturity, as they cant get a bit nasty.

I know shes not a black! I wouldn't buy a black. I dont like the drab/darkness. I meant sumatran Red. I remember back in 1997 when we reffered to the "three" bloods as Sumatran red, Malayan red, and Borneo. I dont remember seeing blacks at all at that time, and now that they are around, Sumatran Black always gets confused with Sumatran Blood, but then I'm told the only real BLOOD snakes are that with red in them. I dont know, but yeah. I definitely knew she was brongersmai. Thanks!
