REFrozen Rats... please read...

savysav Feb 07, 2003 11:07 AM

I accidentally left out a tray of vacuum sealed rats in it's shipping box at room temperature for about 3 days. When I realized what I did I threw the tray back into the freezer. Can I still give it to my savannah monitor and central american boa or throw it out and take the loss?

thanks for the help...

Three days? A frozen rat is meat, after leaving meat out at room temp for 3 days would you feed it to your dog? Actually, a frozen rat would be even worse than a pound of rancid hamburger, all the stomach and bowel contents are still present in the rat meat.

Yuck.

...if it just thawed out and you immediately refroze it, it might change it's texture, or some other quality issue (not a health issue.) I wouldn't want to eat thawed/refrozen steak or fish, but wouldn't expect to get sick from it.

But three days!? If you had opened them, they had to stink after one. Pitch it.

If they are vacuum sealed, there is nothing that could have gotten into the bag and contaminated them. Freezing them for awhile would kill everything anyway. I would at least feed them to the savannah. Just think about what those things eat in the wild anyway..

JUST MY OPINION!
