Baby Northwestern Salamanders

shulamite Dec 29, 2003 01:17 PM

I rescued these two from being squished on my porch last week. They are about 1 1/2 inches long, one is slightly bigger. I've named them Smeagol and Deagol, provided them a home with moss, worms, rocks, water, and tiny crickets. A few days ago I got them some flightless fruitflies as the crickets are too big for them to eat now. I have only seen the bigger one eat crickets and flies, I have never seen the small one eat, though he is fairly active. Should I be concerned that I haven't seen him eat? Can you suggest anything else that he would like better?
I have enjoyed reading all the informative posts on this group, thank you for your answers!

I wouldn't be concerned. I've had salamanders for years that I never saw eat once. As long as they seem healthy and active its an assumption that they're feeding well. Make sure you provide them with cover. And don't keep the substrate too wet.

You can try smaller crickets too if you have access to them, its cheaper than fruitflies.
