Introducing mouse to new colony.

Sillygirl Dec 29, 2003 01:19 PM

Ok, I broke down and bought a large hamster cage and 5 total mice from the herp store (1 male 4 females)all young adults. Well I was warned at the store that one of the females may already be pregnant. Well I got them all home, looked at the black female and well it looks like he was right. So I seperated her into another cage to keep the new male from killing her babies because they weren't sired by him. Not sure when she's going to drop them and I was going to only raise the litter to small fuzzies because that's what I'm needing right now. My question is, can I reintroduce her into the main colony after the litter is gone? If so, what's the best way to do it?

Thanks for the help in advance.

Put her back with the colony. Within just a few days the group will become accustomed to each other and their new home. If she holds off for just a few days the male will except the babies without a problem. He won't know who the father is nor will he care.

Trying to reintroduce the female to the group three or four weeks from now would be more problematic.

Thanks, I'll put her in with the rest. I have no clue when she's due, she doesn't look too huge yet, I was thinking another week or so.
