If I am not mistaken the snakes were not taken because he had a leucistic hog. The problem was that he did not have a permit for them. Here in illinois if you are to own a western hognose you need a permit from the illinois department of natural resources even if they are captive bred from another state. They are on the threatened/endangered list in illinois so we are required to have the permits. I am really not familiar with Colorado law but I bet it is the same kind of thing. Without the permits they can seize your animals. I also think the guy in Colorado had sopme venomous snakes as well without permits and that is a big no-no. SOOOOOOOOO...........basically to answer your question Colorado weterns in themselves are not illegal but you should check to make sure westerns are legal to possess in your area/state.

I know the incident you're talking about... apparently the man had taken the snakes from the wild, bred them and sold the babies, eventually making profits in excess of 100,000. As I was told by Scales -N- Tales, in Colorado it is perfectly legal to capture the Western Hogs and keep them as pets, however, it is illegal to sell them. - Jennifer
