Has anyone seen these cages or used them for russians? Good or Bad Idea?

Turtlemh Dec 29, 2003 03:05 PM

Well I was at a pet store like normal and I saw that they had the tort set up for russians. Its like 4ftX2ftX2ft. Here is the link so u can all see what it looks like.

Would this be good for a russian? Bad? I need Ceedric to have more room and I thought this would be a cool thing to have him in. Any advice is great. Thanks ~Marisa

These are more suitable to tortoise, not cages.

Well Its not like the cage part is at the bottom it has plastic around that part. He wouldnt be able to stick his legs though or see out because of the plastic. I don't wanna make a tort table because it would look like garbage, and I think this would be easier to clean. Plus I all ready have a stand that I would like to put it on. Why don't you suggest cages?

It just seems a little odd to stick a tortoise in a cage. How about a rubbermaid container with the same or larger footprint.

I would agree. May I also offer cement mixing pans. They can be bought at Home Depot, Lowel's, and other home emprovement centers. the cost is very reasonable. I paid $12.00 for one that was around 2ft by 3ft. They wrk great and are as easy to clean as the cage you are looking at.

i'm just using a 15 gal aquarium while he's tiny, but i'm considering making one of these when he gets bigger/older (enlisting my dad's help, of course). that ivy painted on there is a nice, girly touch that i just might have to emulate.

if you were going to make such a thing yourself, though, what kind of wood would you use? i know certain woods can give off fumes if they get wet/damp; i've been told that for that reason you should avoid wood chips as a substrate. i wouldn't want to go to the trouble to amke a new house for junior that'd make him sick.

Ok thanks, I don't know why it is werid to put a tort in a cage long as it Justifies the needs of the tort.

I don't think keeping a tort in a cage is any weirder than some of us having 6 foot high fencing around our outside tort pens. (yep...guilty as charged. I have 6 foot fencing.)

I'm sure the cage could provide a lot of protection for your russian... especially if you have dogs, cats, or kids that need to be kept away from them. Now that I think of it..the cage will make hanging lights easy....

Yes I do have cats, and I suppose u are right. Thanks I will get that cage someday

Sohni Dec 31, 2003 05:24 PM

I don't think you should rely on that cage to keep your cats away from your tortoise. They might not be able to actually touch it, but that wouldn't keep them from harassing it in some way. I can guarantee you that my cats would spend a good portion of the day sitting on the top and staring down into it. If you have cats, your best bet is to keep your tortoise in a room you can close off.
