My new acquired BP won't eat.

texasboa71 Jun 04, 2003 04:50 AM

My first snake 10 years ago was a BP. He was a new born that i had for only 2 months when he died. he only ate once during those 2 months. 10 years later, I purchase my 2nd BP, hoping this time it will be different since i know alot more about snakes then back then. However, I've had my baby BP for over a week now and this one won't eat either. When i bought my snake, they assured me that he had eaten so i took it home. I first tried feeding by placing a live fuzzie in his cage but soon found my snake in their famous ball position. So, i took the mouse out and waited an hour and then placed the fuzzie back in his cage. This time prekilling the mouse. It is now 8 hours later (5:00 AM) and he still hasn't eaten. I'm determined to have a ball python eat but it just won't happen. Can someone help me out here?

Eating is one thing, eating after getting into a new home and moved and all is another. Give your BP time to settle in. Don't bug him, don't handle him and don't try to feed him for another week or two. Change his water and clean his cage if it needs it. But just leave him alone otherwise. Then, and only then, try offering him a pre killed or F/T prey item, at night, before bed and don't bug him or peek til morning. If you know what he ate previously then offer that. Don't leave live with him, obviously unless it still has it's eyes closed. I personally try F/T or prekilled first and work back to live if necessary. In the mean time, chill.

Some questions for you:
-What is the temp at?
-How big is the cage?
-What are you trying to feed him?
-Is he an import or Captive produced animal?
-When are you trying to feed him?
-How often do you handle him?
-Is the animal going to shed?

You say you had your snake a week and it is not eating.
I house my baby ball pythons in sweater boxes with hide on news paper and don't handle them often. I offer them young rats when ever I can get them. Eyes closed, fuzzys.

Give the animal a little more time before you freak out. And think about the questions. We can help you out a lot more if we knew more
