Sand as drainage

GF2003 Dec 29, 2003 05:02 PM

Does anyone see a problem with using childrens play sand as a drainage layer? I think it would be a better alternative than regular old gravel, and more efficient at cleaning. I would also guess it would host beneficial bacteria better than gravel aswell.

Im new to frogs and the forum but dont dont be afraid to use hydroponic beads for drainage. before you set up your tank put a layer of hydroponic beads about 1 1/4in thick in the bottom of the tank(depending on the tank size). Then place a screen over the beads to prevent them from going into the soil. Before beads are placed in the tank rinse them well. the beads are available at hydroponic stores and on the web.

I think sand might not provide much poor space for water holding, in comparison to gravel or the beads. If you are not going to have a water feature flowing through it or whieght is an issue, you can do like me a use perlite. But you have to be sure the frogs wont come in contact with it, because from what I have read it is not easily passed and is more likley to cause an impaction then gravel.
