I use them whenever I make small changes, such as different wattage bulbs, to check the results. They also come in handy for me to keep tabs on what's happening in the 'cool' parts of the enclosure (like hollow logs buried in the substrate) on extremely hot days. If it gets too warm down there, I know I have to set my basking light 'kill' switches to a lower temperature. Sometimes I use temp guns just for fun and curiousity, too.

what I meant to say was that I think they are invaluable for monitor keepers (i.e. get one if you can)

just wondering ......where did you get yours?

Some of the "advanced" keepers will say thats its a waste of money, and you should be able to "read" your monitors and go off their behvaiour.

Really though, for someone who hasnt had the experience of knowing how different substrates, lights, furnature placement, etc, influences the heat gradient in your cages, this little tool with help you out tremendously.

After a while you prob wont use it as much, but you will NOT regret the initial 40. dollar investment!

we still use our Temp Guns just about every day. between hot spots, basking areas, breeding animals, behavior, incubation, etc, there is a use every day for the Temp Guns. every one of our employees has a Temp Gun and carries it around with them all day long : )

I use one almost everyday for all sorts of things. In fact, I even use one for its intended use, and that is to check the temperature of bearings. I regularly check the fan motors and cooler bearings, in the monitor room. It can prevent a surprise breakdown.

Yes, I use one for the monitors, snakes, eggs, etc. F

Hmmmmmmmmm I do that too. The thing is, is it the horse before the cart or the cart before the horse. I do monitor the temps they pick, but I do not use a temp gun as a guide. Its all about context.

Whats important here is for people to understand that a tool is to be used for a particular reason, not merely because its a tool. The monitors themselves are indeed still the best tool. Cheers F
