What is the point of feeding out of habitat

montystone Dec 29, 2003 06:34 PM

I have heard that it is better to feed out of a ball pythons habitat...is it not bad to move a ball python right after he eats..and also dangerous too...????

If its a quick move it isn't harmful to the animal,, but the point of feeding outside the enclosure is to keep your snake from getting used to your hand coming into view meaning food and triggering a strike response. It also makes it easier for you to monitor the eating process and ensures, that if you use a loose substrate, the snake doesn't ingest any of it.

I keep several species, and I don't move any of them out of the enclosure for feeding. I haven't had any of this turn ugly for me.

I've always removed them from their habitat to feed. For me it was just good practice especially with my larger snakes.. including my African Rock Python. I preferred it with the more agressive species. With something possibly like a Ball python or a boa...corn snakes etc.. it'd probably be fine to feed in habitat. Though I don't even do that with my boa..I just feel more comfortable doing things the way I do... in all, its up to the owner what they feel comfortable with.

I have way to many snakes to try to move each one to feed it. I am in and out of their cages a couple times a week to poop scoop and whatever. I don't see them associating my hand with food. A simple solution for that is never use your hand to feed. I place the prey in the cage with forcepts. My hand never touches the prey and they never see it in my hand.

though I only have the one snake, I feed him in his enclosure but I make it a habit of opening the cage and putting my hand in for things other than feeding so he doesn't associate my opening the cage as feeding time. When I do feed him, I dumb the thawed food item into a dish then place the dish into the cage. So far he has never come out to hunt while my hand was in the cage.
