Bath time... confusing time for me

Belizethebeardie Dec 30, 2003 12:17 AM

Why would you give a bearded dragon a bath? They come from a climate where there is rarely water enough for them to bath. I can tell you I wouldn't get my beardie anywhere near water.

I don't have a beardie, yet, but one reason to give almost any reptile a bath is to loosen the bowels when they have not gone to the bathroom. If it is constipated it should help it.

smell bad!! I like to hold mine and if they don't have a bath they wreak..... They drag thier tails through their stools and such which could get you a nice dose of saliminella poisoning if you hol dhtem and don't wash up before you go on to other activities. Did I mention they start to really stink? I give mine a good soak and scrub with a soft bristled tooth brush every day or at least every other day. They get used to it.

Get one of those crest spin brushes they sell. My dragons love the massage as I scrub them clean. It also works great on those tough to clean parts like the feet & toes and tail, and works great to help get off a tough shed. They love it when I massage their bellies with the spin brush, it's so funny

Just gave my beardie a bath for the first time this weekend, and he's 2 years old. Until I came to the forum, I had never even heard of bathing them!

I didn't try it, however, to get rid of any smells. Neither my beardie or his tank have never had an odor issue. I tried it to help him shed and to increase his hydration since he won't drink water from a dish.

Just like any animal, in the wild they would obviously not receive regular scrubs...but it's a different life as pets! I think it's a benefit. What animal wouldn't want to be clean?

wiff up close. That smell also transfers to your hands and clothes. Do you smoke? Cause I know smokers can't smell odors as well as nonsmokers. (being an exsmoker myself) Maybe I'm wrong? It is possible. I seem to have a running number of posts saying what not to do from personal experience...LOL Live and learn I supose...

She just is a stubborn dragon and does what she wants!

Bathing serves many useful purposes and where did you get the idea that live in a area of little water??? One of the areas thick with dragons in the wild is a rain corridor in Australia.

I read that BD's in the wild go for swims in the rivers. My BD's love their baths and swim extremely well. I would say that they can instinctually (sp) swim well because they must encounter bodies of water in the wild.

There was a girl who posted that you should NEVER handle bearded Dragons, and that you should never put them in water.....

Her reason: They don't really like people, they only associate them with food so tolerate it and there is no one in Australia running around throwing them into water!!!!!!!!!!!!!

She pointed our her dragons do not like to be touched nor near any water, I thought that was so sad... its not that they don't like it, I think more they never had a chance to experience it.

When raising hatchling, rare is the baby that does not enjoy being in some water and floating or swimming, so new hatchlings are great little swimmers and play a game when you try to take them out, whipping their tail and swimming away from my hand.... OH maybe she was right, they don't want handled!!!!

Actually bearded dragons in the wild are seen in lakes, ponds, rivers and even ditches swimming in leisure. They also in the wild enjoy aquatic prey to eat. Here in the US we can not feed them fish due to a bacteria in the fish here that could harm beardies, but it is a part of their natural diet in the wild and I don't think they use little row boats to catch them :D

I can't even hold this guy for more then two minutes before he starts to hiss and puff and thrash about. He likes ot dive bomb off of ANY surface I put him on.. if i piut him on the ground he crawls off somethign just to jump off. He's not like normal dragons.. he was not handled at all when he was a baby and he's been abused by two other owners before me. It just seemed odd to me that you would bath one.
I'm a new owner so I'm not very versed in the ways of the beardie. The force is not with me on this one.. I don't think even the most experienced handler could make this guy calm down.. my friend who is extrmemly excellant with beardies and other animals can't even hold him without him puffing up.
If anyone one wants to come over and try giving him a bath.. feel free.. just dont' let him see your feet.. he HATES feet and it makes him edgy.
he's jsut like an abused child. I feel so bad for him.

things he knows of humans from history is not pleasant to him.

I had one rescue this summer that hissed, snap (I called her a snapdragon) and actually bite me good a few times, the only dragon besides a baby in a store that has ever bite me..... today she snuggles under my chin and watches tv with me and demands to be picked up and held.

IT has everything to do with their past, one reason I think CC was so calm when she came her from JoelR's and the imports we set out, everyone comments on how laid back they are and calm..... we handle them all at least twice a day and they know no harm from it, so they enjoy the outing and treats.
