Are my pictus Xanthic or just light?

lovelyleopards Dec 30, 2003 12:31 AM

This is a somewhat old pic of a pictus group of mine, but the color is pretty true to life. Are these guys (the 3 stripes on the left) xanthic? Or are they just a light group of pictus? Thanks!

Yep, my guys are very jumpy even though they are CB. But they aren't nearly as jumpy as my pair of WC Paroedura bastardi (same genus, different species). I think that with a lot of work they will relax a little, but never be leopard gecko tame. Cute little guy/gal you've got there. Take care!

Alright good.. I just thought Raine didn't like me. She won't let me pick her up with my hands to even clean out her tank.. I have to scoop her up into a box to get her out.. she's crazy! Feisty little one I have! But I'm glad to know they are like that.. jumpy and such..

Hi, your picta could easily be sold as xanthics (as I have seen some much like yours advertised as xanthic). Remember when there were just high yellow, aberrant (jungle), normal, and leucistic leopard geckos? Well xanthics are basically parallel to a high yellow leopard gecko. Some have more yellow than others, some have less spotting. There is no xanthic morph in P. picta to my knowlege (if so please correct me with a good photo), some people have been calling amelanistic picta xanthic for a few years. I have seen what appear to be T and T- forms of these amels too. Xanthic means yellow (Greek adj.) and it is used to describe animals with more yellow coloration than the wild type. In picta the yellow is more orange, sometimes yellow. So there has to be some hypomelanistic ("lightness" of normally dark areas) carricteristic involved for this to show. Here is a pick of one of my xanthics next to a normal animal.
