I already asked that below, but I guess either no one knows, or no one chooses to actually take a few minutes to answer.

Yeah, I saw that so I figured I'd ask too in case people missed it. Let's keep our fingers crossed!

I have no idea, but would assume the mex would be a bit more hardy (again, this is an assumption)...you may want to try finding the info from a kingsnake book if you don't get an answer. Hopefully someone out there has experience with these animals.

LOL... sounds like something Keanu Reeves would say.
Seriously, though, if you've read all the posts by MissHisssss, doesn't know if she has a black milk or a mexican black king, you've seen how much disagreement there is about that. These are snakes of different sizes and juvenile colorations, from two very different habitats, almost different continents... and still, no one seems to be able to agree. From the species descriptions and scale counts, it looks like the differences between a melanistic thayeri and an MBK would be very subtle, and thus harder to distinguish. Check it out:
Thayeri:
Size:
Hatchlings: 6 - 9 in.
Adults: 24 - 38 in.
Scalation:
Dorsal: 21 - 25 rows
Ventral: 190 - 211
Sub-caudal: 51 - 65
lnfralabial: 8 - 11
Supralabial: 7
Analplate: Single
MBK:
Size:
Hatchlings: 7 - 8 in.
Adults: 36 - 45 in.
Scalation:
Dorsal: 23 - 25 rows
Ventral: 213 - 225
Sub-caudal: 47 - 56
lnfralabial: 9 - 10
Supralabial: 7 - 8
Analplate: Single
Looks like it may be hard to tell without some serious scale counting. Good luck...
looks like the only accurate way to tell the difference is the ventral scale count.
Have fun!
Melanistic thayeri is a simple recessive gene. It IS NOT one of the many color phases of thayeri.
Kerby...
