chelonian manicures/pedicures?

unchikun Dec 30, 2003 02:31 PM

my baby redfoot's nails are getting longer. they're not terribly long yet, but since i keep him on bed-a-beast (and, of course, it's too cold here for me to have an outdoor playpen for him yet), i guess they don't wear down.

should i leave them be, especially since he's so small? i'd hate to hurt him; i'd at least wait 'til he got bigger before i tried anything unless they got *really* long. my iguana was tame enough that i could snip the tips of her claws, and that did the trick, so i'm wondering if any of you guys do the same for your indoor torts.

Throw a few inverted tiles in the enclosure and the tortoise will gring down the nails itself when it goes about its daily actitivites. I have been browing some Asian sites... Check out how people in Taiwan keep their torotises indoor. http://home.kimo.com.tw/newbenzoo/benmemo/daily/daily1.htm

If you wish to trim, use strong light source and cut only the "clear" part.
