Do most of you with more than just a few snakes name them all?

mrbfrog Dec 30, 2003 03:29 PM

I am just wondering because I am not great at nameing things, all my snakes are named but my mice are not and as I start watching them I consider them individuals even without names. I think that if I were to get many more snakes, there would be a few with names and a few without.

I really like your familly guy quote

Tigergenesis, previously mentioned that he was naming his pets after "Lord Of The Rings" characters. Is anyone doing the same thing, with different themes? I imagine that some of you are doing mythological characters. If you are, are there any favorite characters that have a really neat name or interesting story?
I don’t know where I read it on the forum, but someone named one of their pets (I believe it was a gecko)
Icarus because he was always attacking his heat lamp. That is pretty interesting and inventive in my opinion. Sorry about not being able to give credit to whomever is the owner of the gecko.

Icarus (mythology) In Greek mythology, the son of Daedalus, who with his father escaped from the labyrinth in Crete by making wings of feathers fastened with wax. Icarus plunged to his death when he flew too near the Sun and the wax melted.

Just interested in finding out what is out there.
Thanks

My first snake, an albino black ratsnake (talk about an oxymoron)
is named "Bo"...that's short for "albino". My next one, an albino greenish rat, I named "Ro"...short for Romeo or perhaps Rotu. My normal colored black rat is Joe. Can you guess the unique and imaginitive name of my snow corn? My reverse okeetee is "Ko" (get it?) ....short for "eeteeko" ...My two new corns ar "Ho" and "Po" ...Not all my snakes follow this theme. My garters are Flame and Kiwi. And my leucistic texas rat is aptly named "bugeye" I have a young flame texas rat that I also call Flame. Go figure. Duffy

When I first started keeping snakes I named them all after characters in the Hobbit and Lord of the Rings, but that was 20 years ago. Now I kind of wait for a name to hit me. My male kingsnake went nameless for 3 years until I took this photo last week. I was looking at it and thought 'that spot looks kind of like Edgar Allan Poe' (where the parietals meet center top of head; I know, only I can see it).
So now he's Edgar.

Hello,

I've been using a geographic theme to name my herps for several years now. I typically try to use names common to the indigenous peoples inhabiting the area where the herp comes from. For instance, my two Ball Pythons have west African names ("Ashaki", "Binti", while my two boas have Central and South American names (Cent. Amer. Boa Constrictor "Chale", Colo. Rainbow Boa "Galeno". My most challenging name to date has been my Macklot's Python who is now referred to as "Sujatmi."

jungledancer Dec 31, 2003 12:50 AM

We name all our snakes as soon as they let us know what they want to be called!

We currently have: Zhaan, D'Argo, Chiana, Houdini, Snapdragon, Isis, Pan, Emma, Aaryn Sun, Sensi Star, Munch.

3.6.2 chondros

5 of them have names from a now canceled sci fi show that I believe was one of the best to ever air.

mrbfrog Dec 31, 2003 01:55 PM

I was sad when they cancled it. I thought it was wierd that they killed them in the end.

I named my albino black rat "Malikai" because he is orange and had an attitude like the red headed kid on "Children of the corn". Used to nip and strike and had a mean streak as a hatchling! He has calmed down now, but the name just fits now!

I've got 60 reptiles. All but 8 have names. The 8 are all sand boas that I've acquired recently and haven't sat down and picked out names for, and it doesn't help that 2 have been in brumation since I've gotten them.
So... minus those 8 erycines

Mad props to anyone who can identify a video game I've pulled names from- you rock old school (Except Luigi, that's not from the game!). And if you can't tell, I'm a bit of a mythology fan. I'm considering turning this list into the world's longest sig, but then people wouldn't be able to like my Family Guy quote.

Linzoy Dec 31, 2003 07:50 AM

Ho-oh is a pokemon.

I don't use any themes for my pets, I have a lot of other pets besides snakes. I just pick something that fits the animal. My ball python is called nariko. It means soft, gentle, likes to climb to high places. That fits him pretty well. Once I left him on the floor of my room just to see what would happen, and he climbed all the way to the highest shelf of my bookcase.

meretseger Dec 31, 2003 11:48 AM

That one was sort of a compromise. Ryu and Ho-oo mean dragon and phoenix in Japanese, which I thought really fit my pair of king ratsnakes. I thought the names would pass through the other half of the naming comittee better if I tweaked it to Ho-oh to fit a favorite video game. Which gave me a bargaining position to maybe not name that axanthic het paradox sand boa 'Sandshrew'.
I only name on themes when I have more than one of something. Although I still try to pick ones that fit the little guys.
