My uroplatus cage

Mad_1234 Dec 30, 2003 03:54 PM

This my uroplatus's cage. It has 3 sides screen, most people i've heard recemend all glass or almost all glass cages for uroplatus but a screen cage i think is much better. You get better air circulation and less mould or rotting. I can easily keep the humidy up to 85 percent by having many plants, ferns and mosses in the cage and by spraying it a couple times a day. My grandpa has rainforest property(Washington state) and thats where i got most of my moss and ferns i was surprised how well they grew in a tropical enviroment.

But when I first set up my redeye treefrogs in the same way with live moss growing all over, I thought it was gorgeous.
Then I started to notice bugs in the soil, little white insects everywhere called (springtails) and you can start getting fungus gnats also which are annoying.

Soon my frogs did not do as well as I had thought. And 2 died. Perfect set up for bacterial infections, damp, humid, a bit of heat.

You may have more luck because you have screened, and its more air circulation than a glass tank.

All I know is when I got rid of the live moss and soil and kept my new redeyes at room temp they have been thriving for 3 years.

As far as my uroplatus I just use sphagnum moss, so far so good.

Your tank looks great and like I say since you have mostly screen, you will probably do well.

Yeah i had the same problem with my whites tree frogs little white bugs everywhere. I got rid of the moss but they kept coming finnaly i just got rid of all my plants in the encloser and soaked all the other cage decorations in bleach and bleached out the inside. Luckily none of my frogs died. I haven't had any problems with bugs in my uroplatus cage except a few spiders that came with the moss.

I'm glad you made out okay with your froggies, Like I said mine have been fine for 3 years but without the moss.
I don't think I would ever use the live stuff again. (looked great)

As far as the spiders, your uroplatus would eat them is it saw them, hehehheh ! Well good luck, great home ya made, post some more pics, lets get this forum cooking, LOL.

I'm getting a female henkeli delivered Tues. for my male can't wait to see her. Always exciting waiting for a new one to come.
Hey have a good one,

Eve
