question on tegu growth

gayl101 Dec 30, 2003 04:26 PM

How fast does a baby tegu grow? I'm afraid that my new baby has stunted growth because it had the metabolic bone diease when I got him. He looks like a hatchling to me and I was told he was eight months old! With vet care he is getting better but I don't know what this will do to his growth and potential size.

Does anyone have any knowledge on something like this?

Thanks,
gaylynn

Hi,

Just wanted to say that I only have experience with my Tegu so I have a limited scope. However, Tijolo my male Argentine red Tegu as grown like a weed!!

When I got him for my birthday in May he was 15" STL (total length head to tip of tail). As of yesterday he is 36" STL and 4lbs! He has already grown out of the 6' cage my husband made him and we are planning a new enclosure now. We are lucky that he is a very tolerant lizard as he has had shed problems that come from living in Denver where it is VERY dry! We have added a new humidifier and things have improved greatly. We actualy got through the last shed without the help of the vet.

Don't get me wrong...I LOVE my Tijolo. My co-workers think I am nuts cause I have pictures of him all over my desk. He and my Iguana and my snakes. Ok, so I AM nuts! LOL

Good luck to you and your Tegu. I hope you get him very healthy soon.

VERY FAST!

Be sure you are providing plenty of CA and then give a bit more. They grow sooo fast and need all the calcium to build all that bone. I found some great calcium pellets! It is a lot easier than powder. Tegus would need A LOT of powder. You can get the pellets from New England Zoological Supply (e-mail Rick at mummichog@naisp.net).

My blanck and white is about 14 monthes old and is 46 inches long and 10 pounds!.

Good luck,

Brian
