Savannah Question?

reptileman03 Dec 30, 2003 04:48 PM

I have had a savannah monitor for awhile now and I am thinking about getting another one. My main concern is how 2 savs react to territory...if i got another one a little smaller than he/she will I have to worry about fighting or will they be fine?
Also about sexs, do I have to get a male and a female or both females or can I also house 2 males without any problem. I do not know the sex of my monitor but am going to look in finding it out! Thanks a bunch

Hey...
I can tell you with confidence that Savannah's unlike other monitor species or not in the least bit territorial...
I have kept hotchling as well as adult males with males, males with females and females with females...
As long as the size difference is not ridiculous you should have no problems other then at feeding times where savannah's become viscious monsters...lol... so you should separate them at feeding times...
finally make sure that both animals have been checked and treated by a qualified vet to ensure that the animals do not transfer internal or external parasites with eachother...

hope this helps

I have to disagree here. It is quite possible that two savs of even size will make problems and fight, stressing one of them quite much. Two out of three times I have seen it with my own savs, and the one time it worked with two together, it was a bigger old weak female together with a smaller unsexed one that was quite shy. It's hard, if not impossible, to estimate if it will work or not, so be prepared to seperate them permanently if they can't get along.

I know some one that has kept savannas together and had no problems. There is realy know way of nowing how your sav will react to the new one or if they will fight. If it is possible you could let your savannah be with the new one befor you buy it to see how they are together.
