Hey All, thinking of getting a collared?? Advice needed

jack7777766 Jun 04, 2003 09:44 AM

Hi All,
Im not new to reptiles I have 2 leos, 1 crestie, 1 mali uro, i corn snake and 1 ball python. Ive been wanting to get one that would be just for a pet and right now Im between bearded dragon and a collared. The thing is I saw this gorgeous collared in a petStore the other day, which spiked my interest in them.
Im sure I can take care of all requirements, although could I feed superworms as a staple instead of crix??
What Im most curious about is how they react to handling, will they stay on your hand or shoulder and let you pet them or will they try to run around all day??
I had a chilean dwarf tegu which is what Im thinkiing Im gonna get out of behavior from a collared so if any of you know of CDT's maybe youll tell me the comparison.
Anyways please give me comments on how handelable they are, and also some good caresheets would be appreciated.

Thanks
Jack

hey jack....

wish i knew what to tell you. i'm partial to collared lizards AND beardies. i will tell you though that i have 3 collared lizards that were wild caught. i've only had them about a month but they will already sit in my hand. not only do they sit in my hand they stand at the glass and BEG for me to hold them...lol

If after work or whatever you come back home and you could only play with either one of your beardies or one of your collareds which would you choose to play with, why??
Also since you have both if you can give me a list of pro's and con's or any info on one vs the other Id appreciate, doesnt have to be anything technical or such, your opinion is more than appreciated.
Im just gonna get one (beardie or collared and I want to make sure I make the right choice)

Thanks
Jack

And As much as I love my big old Beardie, hes very sweet, they tend to be inactive as they age. My collareds are alot of fun and I also can open cage and they jump into my hand to come out and play. I let them run in their own room but i am in there and sit on floor with them sometimes and they jump on me and sit in my hand, they are cool little lizards with alot of spunk, I have 9 and since last night also have 7 eggs brewing :0) and everyone is friendly and tame. I look forward to letting them out to play !!! They make great pets, as long as you give them some time ! Hope that helps abit !! Good luck with your decision Jack, hope ya come back and tell us ya got a collared :0) LOL Eve

I know what youre saying about being in a room and letting them run around with you there, thats something Ive always wanted to do with my guys but I just dont have a room where I can let them roam loose and not loose them.
So do you think that I could play and handle them in rooms like that where they might get lost, without them actually getting away and GETTING lost????
Also since you have some in the incubator, are you going to sell them, maybe Ill get one from you if I decide to go that way?
And I can make myself wait, I was planing on buying one of them by next week LOL..

Thanks again
Jack

To have some small area with no furniture, that they can't get lost under, the little suckers investagate everywhere and jump onto everything, dang fun to watch but if ya have a room full of stuff yeah they can go into the smallest of places and go to sleep, even the tamest ones , and then ya rack your brain looking for them. Make some sort of playpen , a corner area blocked off somehow, use your imagination on that, but they do become quite friendly with handling, I handle my lizards everyday, most of the time. Yes I will be selling them, they are aquaflame babies, Father is a beautiful turquoise blue with some yellow, and the mom is a cutie too, brown and cream and yellow feet. But she just laid last night so it now takes up to 60 days maybe a tad less, but thats a wait, if you were planning on one this weekend !!!! You can get one now and I make ya a bet, you will like it so much in 60 days you will want more !!! Look at my pics in kingsnake, Father is Zuni & Mother is Hopi LOL have a good one Jack !!! Eve
