I am looking plans for...

Thomas j Dec 30, 2003 05:37 PM

A 2 section cage. I want each section to have 3 cages 88 inches long by 28 deep by 1 ft high. I want to use sliding glass doors if possible. Or i might be able to go with doors. If some one can draw up a plan i would appreciate it.

I have decided to make it 24 inches deep. I think this is big enough for burms and retics. It is 86 long. Each cage is 1 foot high. Let me know what you think.

Hi Thomas,

In that picture you posted are we looking at one of the two sections? How set are you on those dimensions?

If they can be tweaked slightly we might be able to come up with a design that saves on material.

On the same note, will it be possible to move this cage around corners, through doors, etc.?

Typically I encourage people to limit large cages to 78" tall, which allows cages to be turned upright to go around corners and fit through doorwasy (which are typically about 78" tall).

I've got some ideas. Let me kick them around and get back to you.

Chris

Let me explain my set up. It is a small 8 by 8 building. So it slides in and back against the wall. I may reduce it to 5 cages to get more cage height. The ones i have now are 19 high. It will not have to be much at all. I heat the building with an oiled filled heater. It is backed up by another thermostat. 2 small fans circulate the air. I have a humidifier to keep humidity up.
I plan to have wall of these cages and one wall of racks for BP's.

I agree with ChrisH and some of his concerns. Most importantly, I strongly feel the cages need to be higher, and probably deeper as he suggested (not knowing if you'll be keeping smaller species of Reticulated, for example).

Consider building cages permanently into this building. That way you don't have to worry about them fitting through the door and the walls can become a structural support for the cages. Obviously, the cages will also be larger.

The biggest concern with 1' tall cages is getting the specimens out safely. Factor in the upper and lower lips you'll likely need and the door opening will be very small. Leaning into cages is when a lot of the more serious bites occur.

Let us know what you think and maybe we can come up with something.

I am going to wait. I have 2 cages that measures 6 1/2 ft by 31 deep by 18 -21 tall. And one 6 by3 ft vision. I could not ever bring myself to put them in a cage much smaler than them. I hope to have a bigger building buit in 2004. Then i will make a bunch of cages the size of the ones i have now.

That plan looks like it would have a sagging problem. You would need some sort of support partway along the cage.

A cage that size is going to be difficult to manouver and clean. Also, 24" is too narrow in my opinion for a large python. And 12" high is certainly too short, IMHO. An adult python would have trouble eating in a cage that small. Then consider the waterbowl. Your water bowl is going to have a lip at least 6-8 inches high and the four inches of clearance above it would make it almost impossible for the snake to drink well. A larger shallower pan would just evaporate.

I suggest at least making each cage 24" high, at a minimum.

Also, when you start dealing with cages of this size, I think you should take a good look at the commercial cages made by Vision, etc. For large cages, their benefits are clear!
