To Christyj about sand

barker109 Jun 04, 2003 10:00 AM

LOL!! Isn't that the truth! My concern about the playsand is the silica it contains. I was on the Tegu forum and discovered that the dust is harmful. Makes me worry when the dragons are on it all day because it does contain dust when dry. I know natural sand (ocean type)is available but I can't find it around here. I know you can make a what they call a hard pan clay substrate using sand and cat litter. It hardens up therefore probably not as much dust. I don't know if they would like it though and am not convinced its the best thing for them. Oh well, I'll just keep looking.
Take care and thanks for the response.
Karen

In all honesty, I've never heard of a respiratory problem caused from sand.
If there is a problem, it's usually impaction, chances of that happening can be greatly reduced by feeding in a seperate enclosure..
I also elevate my feeding dishes for greens so the beardies aren't kicking sand into them.
