Texas Rat problems

minedweller Dec 30, 2003 07:35 PM

I have a 4ft Texas Rat whoose eyes turn solid white for about 4 days thought he was in shed but his eyes cleared up and now he sets in his tank and puts out a hiss every now and then and sets with his mouth open alot... What could be the problem?

How long has it been since his eyes unclouded? Has it shed? It may take several days for the snake to shed after the eyes become clear again. I had a greyband that wheezed and popped its mouth open while "in shed" that frustrated me at first too. Apparently it was due to his discomfort and nostrils clogging from the dead skin around his head. If its only been a couple of days since your ratsnakes eyes cleared, it may just be symptoms of its discomfort during shed/effort to loosen skin from around head. Make sure it has access to temps in the mid to upper 80s, and a moist hide or large enough water dish to soak and loosen the old skin if he hasn't shed since its eyes cleared. If it persists, bring it to a vet.

Thanks, He has not shed yet but his eye's have only been clear about 1day and a half. It's 11.00 at night and he is up and hanging around his water so I will keep a close eye on him thanks Minedweller....
