Another plant question from your snotty little sister..

shopaholic Dec 30, 2003 08:28 PM

Gosh, I feel like your little snotty sister who can't stop asking big siblings(who want to be left alone) a bunch of annoying questions. I looked at the safe plant lists everyone has and I ran to the store and after an hour of hasseling the poor garden specialist there half to death for one plant, I purchased a Hawaiian Schefflera Brassaia Arboricola(Umbrella plant), and a Croton. What I couldn't tell in the store and I made them look it up too in several books was if this is the Umbrella that is non-toxic and not its bigger variety that is toxic. Can you guys tell me if I bought the right one? Those garden guys assured me it was, but I'd feel better if someone as nerdy as I am(or not even) from THIS forum would assure me. I decided against the Ficus cause I couldn't find one sturdy enough and I wanted to make sure no oozing sap made my new Cham irritated. If you would do the honors of wiping your snotty little sister's nose by answering this question, I would be much grateful!Maggie

Excuse my bad memory, but what species is your cham? If it won't be eating much if any plant material the Schefflera will be fine. Many of us use the "Hawaiian" schefflera with no trouble at all. I think this is the most common variety you'll find in home improvement stores, KMart, Walmart, etc. If your cham is a veiled and decides to eat foliage I would offer it more fruit and veggies so it will prefer them.

Hi there: thanks for the reply. Its a Panther Cham. Ok, great! Then I guess I'll use it. Maggie
