red light

domina Dec 30, 2003 10:56 PM

I have a 100 watt red heat lamp for my leos, and I'm wondering if it is too bright for them at night..I know there are probably those that use light and those that don't and they will both swear by their ways.I am starting to think that a UTH is safer though. Both in an electrical sense and for the sake of the animals..please tell me what you think.
thanks,
Andy

P.S. any pix of naturalistic VIV's for your leo?

I've had a light KILL a gecko. Oddly, another gecko had been living under that light for months. The UTH is MUCH better. Lights dry out humid hides too fast, any way.

thaks for the advice....how did it kill your lizard?

iluvblackfrancis Dec 30, 2003 11:09 PM

I honestly don't know why...two days after I introduced her into the tank...she was dead. The other two geckos were just fine, and still are. It was one of the worst feelings of my life.

Dang man that right there sucks....i use a UTH and a red light at night because my house gets kinda cold and my parents won't pay the gas bill for the heat. So far my leo's are doing fine under both of them...i have a 60 watt bulb and its not to bright dunno how bright a 100 watt bulb is...

Hope everything works out,
Eric W.

P.S. sorry again about your leo black...

100 watt may be to strong! That puts off alot of heat, especially if you have a 90-100 degree heat pad on one end, I am not a gecko expert becuase I to myself just got one. But just what I have heard, I thought I would pass along. I dont even use a light becuase these types of Gecko's are nocturnal and dont require it, if your house doesnt get colder then 70 thena heating pad on the dry end would be enough, you should use the light when viewing only. Thats my perspective.

It's a good perspective, man. I would get the heating pad, and then as low of wattage light you can get, for viewing. Blue ones look nicer then reds, in my opinion.

maybe I'm missing something but I don't see how a light could kill a lizard.
Was it a new one or something? There must have been something else wrong with it, The only way I could see a light killing a leo is if it could climb up and get burned by the bulb or something.

Pretty crappy thing to go through whether the light did it or not though

Here's the story. I had a female jungle albino, and I was waiting for her to be big enough to put her in with the rest of the j albino females. When she was big enough, I put her in this cage, and watched her for a while. The others had been living under this light for about three months. The next day, she looked just as happy as ever, but when I went to check on them on the third day, she was dead and shriveled up underneath the light. I don't know why...I don't think she was dehydrated, she looked fine, and had water. She was feeding fine too. No more lights for me.

I believe Leo's can't see red light. I'm pretty sure I've read that in past posts. Therefore red bulbs make good night time viewing bulbs. However, with a 100watt bulb, I'd be more worried with it being too hot, rather than too bright. Leo's need the belly heat, and don't need to bask (they are nocturnal). Therefore, a light really only serves as a means to keep a consistent day and night schedule for them, and to help the UTH bring the day time temps up. I hope that helps, and I wasn't wrong or too far off with anything.
