nickpurvis Dec 30, 2003 11:22 PM

HI I am going to get a pair of day gecko some time next year and already have a tank but need some advice.I have a 2 foot tall hexagon tank that is 2 feet from side to side.I want to keep a pair of phelsuma madagascar grandis or a pair of phelsuma standingi.which is easier to keep since this will be my first day gecko.also 3 of the six sides of this aqaurium are mirriors on the inside.I do not have the money to fix these sides and replace them with glass so I was wondering if i could do something like paint it or put some stick on wall paper on it.tell me if this is ok or if you have some other sugestions.thanks for your time

How about covering the mirrored sides with flat cork pieces? Or planting a vertically oriented plant like sansevaria along the mirrored walls? Blacking out with a magic marker...
Whichever method you use, be sure to do it long before introducing the geckoes as the fumes from the marker or silicone will be very strong.

Hi,
It depends on what type of mirror it is, but if it is the type where it is "laminated" to the exterior wall of the enclosure, you can use a glass scraper (flat razor), to get it off. It will not scratch the glass if you used it flat and get under the reflective film. P. standingi and P. m. grandis are equally as easy to care for (which is quite easy), however grandis appreciate humidity a bit more. You just need to provide around 2 inch in diam. (give or take a few 1/16's of an in.) bamboo; vertical, horizontal, 45 & 30 degree angles (maybe some EXTRA different angle degrees, see what they like). Use plants with sturdy leaves or branches, live plants please. Bromeliads, banana (appropriately sized), and pothos are good ideas. It needs to be fairly foliated, but not too dense. Remember to keep the day and night cycle, with good quality light. Emerald Exotics (http://www.emeraldexotics.net) has beautiful Phelsuma, especially standingi.
Good Luck,
Ashton
