I've noticed that people who want to be good buisnessmen online typically have names of reference ready or can come up with them pretty quick by giving names of past customers.
And to fake a reference is typically pretty hard. I mean if you get a pile of Yahoo email addresses, they probably aren't real. But getting names of other dealers and such typically works well.

I bought a chocolate rosy boa a few months back from a guy in Florida. References were the first thing I asked for. He was nice enough to give me some names of people from other internet buisnesses as well as the address to his own website (he was a lawyer or something along the lines).

Lots of times if the seller is some sort of swindler, you can tell if something sounds fishy or not. References are always good, but trust your gut too.
