Rubber - Jaw in hatchlings

tonyreptiles Dec 31, 2003 03:36 AM

Hiya
I bred a handful of geckos this year and they are all doing well except one. In fact it died! It tried to feed but had rubberjaw. I have seen this in other lizards and geckos that have not been supplemented but this one had, along with all the rest. I am not so much worried about supplementation as I have had no trouble like this in 4 years of gecko breeding. However, If anyone can advise on how to treat this problem I would be grateful. I had no joy.

HEy

This is usually an effect of a calcium/viatamen d3 deficiency. It basically seems to be metabolic bone diesease all I can reccomend cause Ive never had this problem before is get maybe some sticky tounges indoor viatmen dust (its the best!) and dust all the food and leave a bowl with the dust in it in the cage however if this is to happen again next time try to take your animal to a vet asap you may not think your vet nos much about reptiles but all sorts of animals can suffer from common problems that reptiles face to for example my vet doesnt no much about leopard geckos so say one of my babys has worms(this has only happend once)i will take her in for a fecal the vet will say she has worms and instead of some special hi tech wormer like you would expect he gives her panacur a horse wormer and i know with calcium defiecentcys most all vets not a supplment for that.

possibilties
now the baby may have had sufficient nutrition but if the mother is lacking in calcium or vits she can produce calcium deficiant babies.

also, a fluctuation in incubation temps can cause babies to be born with abnormalities, i have seen geckos without eyes, eyelids, physical head deformities all kindsa things
