GOLDEN GECKO NOT EATING

jade_e_bear Dec 31, 2003 11:42 AM

I've just recently got a golden gecko and I'm a little paranoid about it being healthy. I really haven't had it that long, about a week, but it hasnt ate and I'm getting a little worried. I leave live crickets in the tank (20 gallon) and I've set out mashed bananas and/or baby food. I not sure I think might be stressed I avoid handling it because I don't think it was kept very well (cramped conditions) so I'm just letting it settle into it's new enviroment. It's not very active either... not even at night really. Anyway any help would be greatly appreciated.

ok their is a possibility that he is dehydrated.alot of geckos from petshops are that way.Make sure you mist him in the morning and evenig as they drink water droplets on the side of the cagews or on cage furniture.also some times to get geckos to feed you have to get them started eating.trie putting some fruit baby food(bannana or apricot usually)on a cue tip and rub it above his mouth and on his nostrils.once he notices he will lick it off and get some food.this is the way some people get their baby geckos to feed and I also used this method to get my baby tropical night lizards to feed.also it could be shedding and just not be interested in food.hope this helps

Well i have had my golden gecko for 3 years now, so i consider myself experinced wiht goldens. There are many reasons why it may not be eating: stress, dehydration, shedding, or it jsut plain doesnt want to. But, i would go with what nickpurvis said and tke liek a cue-tip put some food on liek fruit paste etc.. and rub it on its nose. That way it will ahve to lick it off and that might trigger it to start eating. Don't worry mine didnt eat for about 2 weeks once becasue it didnt want to and it was fine afterwards, just give it sum time. Also they can become very tame, for example mine sits on ym shoudl when iam watching tv, clean its cage, etc... it takes some time to clam them down handle them for about 15-20mins each day and they willget used to you i hand feedmine alot of the time that helps to. Hope this helps.
