O/T Deciding Between Nikon Coolpix 5400 and 5700

JLJ2018 Dec 31, 2003 01:20 PM

I know there are a few people on here that have these models of cameras. Could the 5700 owners please help me justify the extra money for the 5700 over the 5400?

It seems the reviews on the 5700 are not as stellar as the 5400. The 5700 seems to have troubles focusing in low light conditions. Many reviews say it's great for other things, but if taking pics indoors then to just forget it. Do you 5700 owners find this to be true?

On the other hand, no one seems to have anything bad to say about the 5400. So therein lies my question. What makes the 5700 that much better if there are complaints about the performance and it's more expensive?

I've never owned these cameras nor been around anyone that has. I'm just going by what I've researched on the net...just thought I'd see if any of you Coolpix owners had to go through this same decision.

I agree with the one complaint, it does have trouble focusing in low light conditions.

I think the main difference is in the optical zoom. The 5700 has twice the optical zoom that the 5400 has. If you are just going to focus on macro shots I would probably just save your money and get the 5400. I personally do a lot of hiking and take pictures of animals I find in nature, many of which are far away so I enjoy having the extra zoom. I really like the 5700 but have not read, used or seen the 5400. Here are some examples of the pictures I have taken with the 5700:

Those are absolutely beautiful! Nice capture of the motion on the waterfall by the way. Well, I have a feeling a lot of my pictures will be taken inside of my wife, kid, and other subjects...probably most of them in black and white also, so capturing moments in low light is going to be very important.

Although, having the zoom capabilities of the 5700 would be nice..and it obviously takes incredible pictures (actually I know it's probably more YOU than the camera!) but especially with it being my first "serious" camera I think I might save the money and go with the 5400.

Thanks Georgio...awesome, awesome pics.
