Does anyone use shelf liner for a substrate?

veronicag Dec 31, 2003 02:29 PM

The reason I ask is because Houdini, my male Saharan, has gotten millet seed lodged in his mouth several times and now has a deformed mouth. I hope it's not permanent and will heal over time. I have temporarilly removed all of the millet from his sleeping area, that's where he seems to get the seeds jammed in his lips. I need to remove all of the millet so he can completely heal. I don't want to use anything that can get lodged in this "hole" in his mouth. Sorry I don't have a good photo to show you, but he really does have a large chunk of skin missing on the bottom tip of his mouth. You can see right through to his teeth when his mouth is completely shut. I just hope I haven't deformed him for life. He seems to be able to chew his food ok. Any ideas on what kind of substrate to use while he heals? Shelf liner? Butcher paper?

During parasite quarantine, I'm using cheap white hand towels. In place of a real substrate, it's easy for them to walk on and they hide in the rumples. The towels come out and are bleached in the wash and replaced with fresh ones. It seems to be working well for me as a temporary thing.

I have a bearded dragon and I use shelfliner. I think it works great and it looks nice to.I use the duck brand. You can get it at wal-mart for 4$ for an 20x4 roll.
