greatgobsofgecko Dec 31, 2003 02:46 PM

Hey

About two weeks ago I decided to start breeding mealworms I bought tubber ware containers about 7 inches wide and 11 inches long and put give or take a hundred a thousand mealworms in the one container with oat brand beeding some carrots potatoes brochlie etc. In the other container I put oat brand and then added carrots potatoes etc. As i got beatles so every day i take the pupate out of the mealworm container put them in a little container and then put the beeteles from them in the next container. Now that ive rambled on and got you nowere sorry about this. How long will the beetles live and around howmany mealworms will be produced from about 1000 beatles. Just estimations is cool and how many mealworms can come from 1 beatle. Can anyone sex beetles like crickets thanks.

All i know is(not for certain) The beetles can lay like 400 eggs and will live for about three weeks.

Don't quote me on that one though,

with so many it wouldn't be a bad idea to have 4 or 5 containers to put the beetles in, either separate them or switch them to a new container every week or two.

as for sexing them, the males are always on top

Thats to funny!!!!! the males are always on top LOL, my brother once asked "with the hard shell how do they mate???" i called him down to see after i found a few *doing it*. He took one look was all grossed and ran upstairs LOL.

Having a few thousand mealworms around isn't such a bad thing......my 7 leos go through about 1000/week so i need to order 4000 a month to stay on top of them. I thought my own colony would suffice for a while but was proved wrong...my mealworm order will be here next week LOL and i'll be ordering monthly from now on

Are the beatles mating when thers about a pile of 20 in the corner of their container... or are they fighting ver a female?

I don't know. Any time my beetles grouped together it was because they were going after their water source. Any time i saw breeding happening it was only two involved.

If you have too many beetles, just feed them to your geckos. Mine love em.
