HOW TO SHIP....?

puppychulo Jun 04, 2003 11:48 AM

One of my friends is moving from the West Coast to the East Coast. I read here on KS (can't remember if it's in the Boa or Python forum) that taking snakes in the plane cabin is no longer allowed. Other than driving cross-country in the middle of summer, what's the best way for her to bring her snake with her or mailing it? If she just sends the snake overnite by either regular mail would it be subjected to having it's box X-rayed? If she ships FedEx/UPS/Airborne without an account and without letting them know the contents, would she get in any kind of trouble?

This information would be helpful for those of us who are just hobbyists that may have babies to sell in the future as well.

Thanks

The US Mail is out. You cannot ship snakes through the mail, it's against postal regulations.

Shipping with another carrier without properly labelling the box may be a Lacey Act violation, and it's not a good idea anyway because the animals won't be treated as animals.

You may want to see if there is a breeder in the area with a shipping account who can air freight the snakes for you if the airlines won't.

And, afiak, you could never take exotics in the passenger compartment, only dogs or cats in carriers. (Which I believe they've stopped.)

UPS, Airborne Express, FedEx all have strict regulations with transporting live animals. From what I understand it is legal to send frogs and various lizards. Snakes are not permitted.

But I just wanted to point out that many still ship snakes using UPS, Airborne, and FedEx. Are you taking a gamble...of course.

You could try sending it via air cargo. I believe North East provides this service. Sending via cargo is quite expensive.

I hope this helps....
