new tokay setup

earthsscum Jun 04, 2003 12:26 PM

its a 29 gal. aquarium its got reptibark as the bottom substrate and a layer of moss above that. the humidity and temp. gauge is in the back.. what i am wondering is how i can keep the humidity at a constant level because the heat lamp sucks it out within a few hours and the screen top lets it out too easily as well.. i mist it about twice a day... oh and its housing a pair of tokays any suggestions?

Your tokay vivarium sounds and looks luxurious. If you room ambient temperature stays around the mid 70's at night, and up to the mid 80's during the day, you can eliminate the heat lamp and move instead to a under the tank heat strip that is under about 1/4 of the bottom. The alternative is to go to a smaller heat lamp. I suggest a hockey puck halogen that has more directional heat and does not overheat the whole enclosure.

The big question is this -- did you measure the humidity to find out if it is too low or are you guessing? Humdity is never constant, it changes as the day changes, as air conditioners come on and off, etc. The temperature gauge in the back only tells you about one small are of your tank. Did you measure different areas to see if you have gradient temperature throughout the enclosure?

I use a towel, like a kitchen to cover part of the top of all my Tokay vivs. This breaths and helps hold in humidy compared to just the screen top. I personally wouldnt use a UTH on a Tokay because they rarely go to the bottom and like to stay high on the viv walls
