Diet of a Waterdragon?

CokeOfMan Jan 01, 2004 10:18 AM

I read on a Waterdragon page that the keeper fed one of them in a week like this: stl ate 14 large to medium crickets, 27.5 King mealworms and 1/2 a pinky.

That is a lot of mealworms. I am not at all criticising, I do not know much at all, cause I am thinking about getting a Waterdragon, so I'm just asking. I want to know thats all. Is that good, I mean crickets are from what I know, far more healthy the Mealworms. Shouldn't the basic isect diet cosist of mailny Crickets. I am just wondering?

Thanks In Advance

Crickets are mostly water, they are okay for babies that are too small for pinkies etc., but are nothing more then snacks to adults. I don't know what king mealworms are, but if thats a common name for Zoophobas then, I agree they are a much better food. Personally, the stable food for my waterdragons are fuzzies, 2-3 per waterdragon per week.

So, the insect diet should be cosisting mainly of King Mealworms..Zophobas? And ofcourse the pinkys too.

I would never feed an animal strictly pinkies for a diet...you are going to end up with a very fat obese animal.

Pinkies are very high in fat and cholesterol. They do provide a calcium benefit from the bones but I would stick to crickets, king mealworms, and you can even get them on canned dog food (which must be low in ash content) AT MOST: I would feed 1 pinkie a week. I feed one full grown basilisk: 3 crickets, 3 king mealworms and offer canned dog food which is usually accepted every day. They get a pinkie every 1 or 2 weeks.

In my opinion pinkies are not a balanced diet and they are not the best choice for food...even roaches are an excellent option...but i'd offer pinkies, waxworms, and feeder fish very sparingly to water dragons and basilisks.

It's hard to supplement them with vitamins on a mouse or mealworm...as the dust has a tough time sticking...crickets are perfect for dusting so at least you will know that the animal is recieving the vitamins it needs.

I raised my waterdragons on pinkies and fuzzies and the oldest is about 16 years old now and still breeds. Lets see you do that with crickets and mealworms!
