Rehabilitation of Geckos

schoolfield Jan 01, 2004 12:24 PM

Just yesterday, I begged the owner of a local pet shop
to give me three out of four of his geckos (the fourth
was still doing ok)... you should see these guys that
I brought home... I have two tinier ones and one
gecko that looks to be a young adult - but is so emaciated that it's hard to tell.

So, I have them set up, in a peaceful, low stress
place... and I am just wondering exactly what the
rehabilitation process is. I was reading an article
on Gecko Network that talked about the use of Pedialyte and Ensure to restore hydration - then after a period of 3-4 weeks, the introduction of blended crickets/ensure/mealworms, etc...

So, what quantities am I looking at? What ratio of Pedialyte to Ensure? How often - how do I know if they've had enough, etc?

I will be taking these three to the vet tomorrow (I imagine that they have been through undue stress in addition to having an internal parasite of some sort). In
the meantime, I have been giving them a few cc's of
this Emergency Reptile stuff (specifically formulated
for insectivores) - and my really emaciated one
latches on the to syringe and won't let go... seems
to me to be a good sign.

I already have five adult geckos, and somewhat
rehabilitated them - I thought they were in bad shape
when I bought them, but they were just fine in
comparison to these little guys I took home. I mention this becuase I am very familiar with my adults and proper care for them in general... just haven't had to "bottle" feed a little one before.

Anyway, if you wouldn't mind sharing whatever
information you can with me, I would so greatly
appreciate it - articles, web sites, personl experience, etc.

I'll do whatever it takes to give these guys a chance.

Thanks,
Dacia

Hey There Your Doing A Good Thing So I Wanna Help You

First off I use gatorade instead of pebolyte (sp) it seems like the geckos like the taste more. Use a siringe to adminaster it just put a drop on there nose when they like put a second one on do this till your satisfyed there full of liquids or till they stop licking by taking your time and putting it on there nose they will be in much less stress if I were you I would keep food in with them from square one if there already skinny and all. Put some mealworms in a bowl if thats what they eat or give them crickets. A great thing to do would be to give them like 1 waxworm a day as a supplment this will pork em up because of the waxworms hi fat contenet. After they start getting fatter give them say one waxworm every three days and eventually once a week. After A while they should pork up. If they take no intrest in the waxworms and your worried about them starving you could try pinching of the head of the waxworm and putting some guts on the geckos nose and letting him like them off. This worked for me with a gecko I took home from a local pet store he was only 8 grams and his sister was 24 grams so he was way behind on growth this was all a month ago now hes 14 grams thats alot to gain be patient keep in mind that a dozen crickets barrely if at all ways a gram it his body that will make him weigh more not his food the food will suplment his bones and as they grow he will and exese food will put weight on him let me know if this helps or you have any more questions my emails is below.

Thanks for the info.

I will pick up a few things from Walgreens today. I'll put Gatorde on the list.

I have this awful feeling that one of the baby ones will be blind. I didn't realize it until I started looking at her very close - she hasn't opened her left eye since I got her, and I can't tell if she's used her right one at all.

I will look into the waxworms. Are waxworms different from mealworms?

And as far as quantity - did you limit the Gatorade, or is it more of a "watch and see" type of administration? I really am concerned about their liquid content... it's pitiful what's happened to them...

Thanks again.

Hey

The gatorade was more of a watch and see process they will stop licking there lips when ful. Waxworms are different the mealworms they have like 10 times the fat content and are much easier digested however leos can become hooked heres a sight were you can get waxworms www.armstrongcricket.com you should only need about 100-150 there 50cents per 50 cup i think there minimum order is like 11$ so get some other stuff you want and if you get mealworms and waxies the shipping should be free.
