Gravid Questions

masterplan Jan 01, 2004 05:13 PM

My female has been hugging her branches quite a bit for the past few weeks and actually looks like she's tipping over a lot of the time. I initally wrote this off as stress or "skittishness" but now I'm thinking more about it.

Is this a sign that she is gravid? I'm pretty sure she is but I'm not 100%. (she was with my male when she was receptive but I'm not sure they mated---I think so...).

By the way, if she is gravid, how long until she starts digging? She has been this way for about a month now and I want to make sure she isn't eggbound.

She seems fine from an energy standpoint as she will move away pretty quickly when I approach. She does seem even more skittish than usual, though.

Let me know if this sounds normal or cause for a concern. Or, should I just keep my eyes open for any other changes.

Hi-

When dose she do this? When she sees you and or the male? What are her everyday colors right now and what color is she when she sees the male? Do you have a photo? You will know when a panther is gravid, her colors will change, attitude, food intake, weight gain .... By her hugging a branch closer or rocking to the side dose not mean she is gravid. When you bred her how long were they together? How many times did they mate? Did you see the actual physical mating? It is always smart to keep a container of soil in the bottom of gravid female cages. When you see them start to dig place them in an egg laying setup. The time frame for laying the eggs will vary, if she is indeed gravid and has been showing gravid colors for a month the time is near. Gravid colors will vary by female but in general there over all color is an orange / black or just overall darker colors. Gravid females will turn almost black in the view of the a male and gape. Hope this helps!

Happy New Year!

Thanks for responding...

She is basically hugging and leaning slightly at all times. When shes me she leans even further almost to under the branch! I just took her out to see her response when she saw my male and she immediatley gaped and darkened to almost black. She is not weak and tried to make a quick exit when saw me. Her usual colors now are a deep peach/orange/beige with black markings (note: right now she is pitch-black...5 minutes after seeing my male). She is quite plump now but not eating very much. She was always an agressive eater. Now, it takes some time until she puts down a green worm.

As far as breeding: they were together for about two days. I watched for about two hours or so. She was putting herself into positions to accept him but my male was not interested and was just trying to get out of the cage. Later, he seemed curious and was hanging out around her. At that point, I'm assuming they mated. The next day, she was dark and hiding on lower branches and just wanting to get out of the cage.

Please let me know what I should be watching for to make sure she is alright. Also, is there anything I can do to get her appetite back? Finally, what do you recommend for an egg-laying cage (lights, heat, set-up, etc.)? I'm pretty sure she is gravid and the time must be near.

Thanks so much for your help. You really are a God-send to an amateur like me!

Hi-

She is gravid alright. She my just look like she is hugging the vines because of all the added girth from being gravid. You will also notice gravid females will increase there diets then cut off food intake. When food intake slows or stops this means the time is near for egg depositing. Another sign is the female will become restless and wonder around the cage more then normal and frequent the bottom of the cage.

There are many different was of creating an egg laying area. Some will just start digging in a pot and lay the eggs. Others will dig in the pots but not lay because it is not deep enough. Don't count on your female laying the eggs in the cage she is in now, unless it is quite large and has a deep box filled with about 10-12" of soil. I have a cage that holds a 10 gal Rubbermaid container filled with supersoil that my females lay in. If you can time it right move them in to the cage a few days before they are suppose to lay. There is an article in the E-Zine on egg laying setups, click HERE

Thanks for the info. I've been waiting for her to start wandering around the bottom of the cage but she has shown no signs of that kind of activity yet. She has stopped eating though as she didn't eat any of her Green Horned Worms today.

I got her an egg laying pot and got it ready by putting in her cage right now so she is almost all set.

If I put her in a separate egg-laying cage, what else should I put in there with her? (i.e. plant to climb, etc.) Or should it just be a plain soil base cage? Please let me know.
