Thermostat not working now....

cito Jan 01, 2004 05:42 PM

My week-old thermostat from big apple isn't working. It was hooked up to two heat pads and a heat lamp. Everything was working great for about a week. And then today I was in my room for about an hour and noticed that the heat lamp wasnt going on and off like it usually did. So I looked at the thermostat and the "heat source" light was off, but the heat lamp was still on. So I turned down the dial on the thermostat to like 60 degrees F, and the heat lamp stayed on. The thermostat is in the same place it always was. I dont know whats wrong. Has this happenned to anyone else before? Any suggestions?

I would contact the people at big apple herps... They might know if it is something simple or not and if it is not then they might replace it for you...can't hurt to call them. Todd

yeah PLEASE find out whats up with your thermostat. I just recently bought the same one for christmas, so far so good, but I only have a heat mat connected to it.

Check to see you didn't go over your 300watt limit for the device.

Please post to let us know what they tell you.

That sounds like a very peculiar situation. If you had overloaded the device and blown the fuse, I would think that your heating devices would not operate, yet you say they do. If you were to plug just the thermostat into the line voltage with no heating devices hooked up to it, the “heat source” light would glow no matter what temperature you dialed in. Why don’t you unhook your heat source(s) from the thermostat and see if that light comes on. Is it at all possible that someone else in your home plugged your heating devices (they’re probably on an extension cord or power strip) directly into the wall and unplugged your thermostat? Just checking. I’m using 15 of these thermostats; they’ve all worked fine right out of the box.

"If you were to plug just the thermostat into the line voltage with no heating devices hooked up to it, the “heat source” light would glow no matter what temperature you dialed in."

Actually what was meant is that whatever temperature I dial in, the heat lamp stays on. So if the dialed in temperature is 60 F, the heat lamp will stay on, but the "heat source" light will be off even though the actual temperature is over 100F. Usually when the red "heat source" light is off, all the heat sources are off, but now when the red "heat source" light is off, my heat sources are still on.

"Why don’t you unhook your heat source(s) from the thermostat and see if that light comes on."

I unhooked all the heat sources from the thermostat and then after about 3 minutes the red "heat source" light turned on.

Sorry, I'm stumped. Guess you need to call Big Apple tomorrow. Let us know what they say. Good luck.

I actually got it working for about 6 or 7 hours, and then it went back to the same problem. So I called big apple and they didnt know what was wrong either but they will be happy to exchange it for a new one.
