What species to put in 84"x30"x48" cage?

paul kemes Jan 01, 2004 06:21 PM

monitor or otherwise?
I recently downsized my water dragon collection and now have an empty, large cage. . .those dimensions are lengthxwidthxheight. Here's a pic of it set-up for wd's, but this weekend I plan to gut it and re-decorate it. Any suggestions on what species to work with now?

Thanks,
Paul Kemes

You certainly have some options with that cage but it will really depend on what YOU are interested in. This cage will be too small for some of the more popular monitors such as black throats and white throats (ionides and albigularis) - though some will say that is big enough (NO WAY if yo fully understand these animal's natural behaviors). You might look at tree monitors (you can can a trio in a cage that size), dumeril's monitor, black roughneck monitor (one of my favorites to work with) just to name a few. Obviously, you want to make sure that the set up meets the animal's specialized needs.

A colony of Leach's giant gecko would be PERFECT for that cage... Maybe 1.3... sigh....

(Rhacodactylus leachianus- the world's most huggable gecko)

Intensely EXPENSIVE... sigh....
I've been lusting after gran terre leachies for three frikken years...
(can't justify the cost unless i breed them, can't afford sexed adults, most babies turn out to be males, take 4 years to mature. bleh.)
