Alligator Skin Care; Supplements

JungleGems Jan 01, 2004 08:18 PM

I am about to receive my first baby alligator next Tuesday. I found the information at Crocodilian.com extremely helpful, however I'd like to get some information on a couple of topics from experienced crocodilian keepers on this forum.

Regarding vitamin/mineral supplements for crocodilians, can anyone here give me any good recommendations as far as brand and type are concerned? I've found many supplements for reptiles in general, but alligators do not fit the "norm" as far as reptiles in the pet trade are concerned and I'm not sure if these supplements would work for them as well.

I would also like to know if there are any oils sold that may be beneficial to a crocodilian's skin, as many stores sell these types of oils for snakes and other species of reptiles. Being semi-aquatic, alligators may have no use for such products but if they do, I would appreciate any recommendations.

Finally, with respect to crocodilian dentistry, are teeth replaced when lost or do they retain the same amount their entire lives?

I welcome and appreciate any advice you may have on these matters. Thank you- Jennifer

** As long as you feed whole prey items and provide a variety of food items, supplementation is not required.

** None. Alligator skin works well on alligators.

** Teeth are constantly lost & replaced.

Hope this helps!

John
