stop feeding in winter????

HerpGuy#1 Jan 02, 2004 01:17 AM

I got Queen (my baby coastal carpet) from lllreptile online. I went to the pet shop to get a rat pinky and the guy tells me that at this point in the winter, you're supposed to stop feeding them until the winter's over!!! Is this true? Because it seems a little outlandish to me. Any feedback much appreciated.

The only time you should stop feeding your Carpet Python or any snake for that matter is when you put the snake into brumation (hibernation) - which is a cooling period of anywhere from 4-6 weeks on up. Most people only brumate their snakes when they are going to breed them, as it is necessary for most species to breed, however if you are keeping the snake for your own pleasure with no plans on breeding the snake than IMHO there is no reasonn to cool him/her down. However don't be deturred if the snake refuses food during the winter months as sometimes it is their natural insticnt to not eat.

good luck!
Ralph

I shouldn't say the "only" time you should stop feeding is during brumation as if the snake is about to shed they often will not eat, also some diseases/disorders and parasites are reason to temporarily stop feeding...
