breeding scenarios

newherpaddict Jan 02, 2004 10:23 AM

My first herp was an albino leopard gecko named sasha, now that i am experienced with herps and decided to pursue a herpetology career when i'm older I would like to breed her. She is just albino, no het or anything what kind of male would give me what kind of babies with her.

Hey,

A albino male would give you albino offspring a normal male would give you het for albino offspring a hypo tang would give you normal double het for hypo and albino those offspring would make some tangalbinos a hypo tang het for albino would give you some tang albinos and hets.

I think thats all right

Hope this helps

Hypo is a line bred trait, or in the Hypo and Super Hypo Carrot tails, it is most likely a dominant or co-dominant trait. I'm unsure whether you can get hets from that gene. But, most tangerine and hypomelanistic geckos are a result of selective breeding, so there's no such thing as het. Same with High Yellow - no hets.

Chad Long created a pretty useful tool here.

What does het mean? n/p

like albino, blizzard and patternless, het is short for heterozygous. Heterozygous means that an animal has the gene in it, but doesn't show it; so it looks normal. If you breed an albino to a normal leopard gecko, all of the offspring will be normal looking het albinos.

Homozygous is the term referring to an animal that is showing the simple recessive mutation. For some reason, we don't call these homos, just albino, patternless or blizzard.

I hope that helps.

So if an animal is 'het' for something (albino for example), how do you know when that trait will show up in it's offspring? does it skip a generation, 2 generations, 3, etc?

greatgobsofgecko Jan 02, 2004 05:43 PM

With a het it will show up again as long as it being breed to anyother het or homo gene for example het for albino times albino i think would produce about 50percent albino 50 percent het. het albino time het albino produces 1/4 albino 1/4 het albino 1/2 normal all normal looking off spring would be considered 25percent possible het albino since you cant tell.

I believe thats correct someone correct me if im wrong.

Your right about the het X albino. Here is the probability of a het X het.

Het X Het
25% are albino
50% are het
25% are normal

So out of 4 eggs you would get 1 albino, 2 hets, and 1 normal. 2 out of 3 are definite hets but you don’t know which one ones because they (hets and the normal) all look normal. This is referred to as 66% possible hets.
