too small?

pacman101 Jan 02, 2004 11:04 AM

I was at lll reptile.com and was gonna order a powersun bulb because at my pet store they are 70$ and it says do not use on small cages. Is my 40 gallon breeder too small for a power sun bulb?

Nope I generally used 100 watt merc vapors on 40 breeders. I would also pic up a 10" clamp lamp while you are at it. the 8" ones don't fit the merc vapors that well. And don't buy one of those crappy things by flukers they don't fit merc vapors either.

Thanks, I glad I can use one because I just returned my fluorescent hood lol....

I would still use a flouro. Just a cheap one from home depot (fixture and light). The brighter the light the better it is for you dragon. A merc vapor will make basking site bright enough. But the other end will be dark that is where the fluoro light is useful.

I dont need a fluoro because I have an extra lamp that I will put at the other end for added light.

I am not sure whether I should use a regular incandescent bulb or the 50 watt basking bulb I have. What do you think?

grimdog Jan 02, 2004 03:29 PM

On the cool end of the tank you don't usually need any type of heat so a low wattage is good. that is why i said a flouro. you get bunches of light for only 15-24 watts instead of having to use a 50 watt basking light. but if you have a cool room a second basking spot might be good. just set up the tank and measure all surface temps before getting the dragon.

Do you use spot or flood?

Tracey Jan 02, 2004 11:33 AM

Use the flood....Derek is right, I use the 100 watts ones on the 40 breeders I have young dragons in without a problem.
