Nose Rub in Chinese Water Dragon

Paris6542 Jan 02, 2004 11:08 AM

I have had my water dragon for 2 years now. When I first got him I had no idea that you were not supposed to house them in glass, he quickly developed nose rub, so I got him a Reptarium which he loved because he could climb on the sides. I recently built him a new cage due to the fact that Reptariums don't hold in moisture or heat. But his nose rub has not gotten any better. He has already been to three different vets. One told me that it would go away on it's own. The other one had no idea what my water dragon even was, and the third one gave me this anti-biotic that I had to inject into his food. That didn't work. So does anyone here know how reverse or help nose rub? or is it just untreatable?

The first thing is to correct is the environment. IF there are signs of infection such as-whitish crusting, cheesy-oozing material, then a reptile-oriented vet should see the dragon & assess the condition. Minor symptoms as related above can be treated with Betadine & hydrogen peroxide using sterile swabs & rinsing with water daily until the symptoms clear-up. If there is rostral abrasion, Silvadene cream or Neo/Polysporin should be applied until the tissue heals over. Also, a product called Nu-Skin is very good in protecting the rostral tissue & has antiseptic properties, too. The link below has excellent information about CWD-husbandry & care. You might want to try putting a backdrop(background with a tropical image) on the sides and back of your tank. If the water dragon sees that, he shouldn't rub its snout on the glass. If that doesn't work, a vet told me to put bubble wrap, that way if your dragon still rubs the glass, it won't damage the snout.
