Why did she eat her own babies?

evil-elvis Jan 02, 2004 01:19 PM

First time trying to breed mice. The first litter was born and the mother ate them. Well now. Tried a second time. She ate them again (left the heads and spinal columns). Am I doing something wrong or do some mice just do this and I need to try with a different female? She had plenty of food/water available.

Thanks for help.

either she is no good for breeding or too stressed out. I was having problems with mice eating their own babies until I covered part of their rack. I never touch the mice except when cleaning. In fact, I rarely see them except when cleaning. Of all of the problems that I have had with mice, I say stress was the most damaging.

Mine are so used to seeing me that I can count babies as they are having them, if I want to. If it's cleaning day and they are whelping... they will merely stop till I'm finished cleaning and then they begin whelping again. I know people will disagree but I just noticed that they get more nervous about things if I leave them alone.... just like a snake or even a dog would do if you left them alone. I have 18 colonies going and go in to check them out all the time. Even at night, with lights going on and off and the whole nine yards. With this, I have had good results and only find temperatures as being a problem at times.

Just my opinion
