Aquarium type Incubator HELP

Has anybody had any experience using this method of incubating? I'm waiting on a few geckos to lay so it's not in use as yet. The water is beginning to smell, only after a few days of set-up! Would I have to go out and grab a filter and pump etc to eradicate this or is there a simpler method?
